LORELY CREWE HALICI
he quintessential multicultural eclectic, I was born in England and came to the U.S. when I was nineteen. I was the first full-time female student to graduate from Franklin and Marshall College, completed my Masters at American University, and graduated from Catholic University with a Ph.D. in Modern Languages, specializing in Medieval French Literature. My thesis concerned the expression of dissent, heresy and revolt - social, political, and sexual - in the early medieval period.
Too restless to stay put and publish or perish, the resulting paucity of job openings in my field of specialization, has challenged my creativity. Taking a cue from T.S. Elliott, "We shall not cease from exploration," I have lived and worked on four continents and speak five languages. From horseback guide through the mountains of Lesotho to archaeological guide for jeep safaris in Turkey, from photographic model in London, England to court interpreter and probation officer in Pennsylvania, from editor of foreign area handbooks to vice president of an international management company, I simultaneously worked my way up the academic ladder from being a part-time teaching assistant to starting a graduate school, as dean, in Washington, DC.
eaching and mentoring has always been an important part of my life, and I sometimes feel that I have received as much inspiration from my students as I have from my mentors. Inspiration also comes from my two wonderful sons: Jonathan studying oriental medicine in California and Stefan at a nearby prep school. Working at the Creativity Foundation allows me not only to pursue my writing - currently one manuscript on life in Turkey is making its rounds at the New York publishers - but also to interact with some brilliant people and help to put in place and administer a very worthwhile program.
